Abstract

A set-up is described that allows both the use of a large solid angle (4.4 msr) and a good angular accuracy (δθ⋍0.3° for16Oionsat 68 MeV in the study of heavy-ion induced reactions. Two position-senstive gas counters are used in the focal space of 12-index analyzing magnet. It is shown thatonly a few arithmetic operations are needed to calculate the reaction angle and the excitation energy associated with every event. A test of the method is given with the study of the 16O(16O, 12C)20Ne reaction at 68 MeV. An energy resolution from 140 to 170 keV is observed on the 12C spectrum for a total angular aperture of 5.2° and despite a large kinematical factor (E−1dEdθ = 0.40 at θ12C = 12°).
