A reaction chamber was designed and constructed to meet the more stringent requirements of experiments with heavy-ion beams and crystalline targets. Deposits and effects of residual gas particles are minimized by operating in the 10−9 torr range and by the exclusion of organic materials in the construction of the chamber. All features of conventional high-precision target chambers, such as rotatable detector mounts, target air lock, external and remote controls for target and detector orientation, were retained and improved.
