Numerical calculation of absolute forward thick-target bremsstrahlung spectra

Abstract

A method is presented to obtain a simple analytical expression from which one can calculate numerically the absolute forward thick-target bremsstrahlung spectrum produced by electrons in the energy range from 1 to about 25 MeV.

In penetrating the target, multiple scattering or diffusion and energy loss of the electrons together with attenuation of the created gamma-ray beam occur and all these phenomena are taken into account.

Comparison with experimental results for 1 to 21 MeV electrons incident on low and hifh Z-, intermediate and thick targets, shows a remarkably good agreement in magnitude and shape.

The overall accuracy of our results is estimated to be of the order of 20%.
