Abstract

An α-particle source and slotted entrance aperture has been used to investigate the optics of a magnetic spectrometer. The method described has proved to be a simple and accurate way of mapping out the focal plane, obtaining information about the aberrations, and hence determining the optimum field settings for some of the magnetic elements.
