Abstract

Energy loss straggling of fast heavy ions in gases has been measured with a time-of-flight method. The results are compared to different model calculations. A suprisingly good description is given by ths simple Hvelplund-Firsov formula which does not include charge exchange straggling. By using this formula, also the electronic contribution to the range straggling can be estimated.

Such interactions being stochastic, the range (up to which it can traverse ending up with zero kinetic energy) varies for different particles, resulting in an energy distribution of a finite width (ideal distribution would be a delta function). This is called energy straggling [4]. In addition to the aforesaid scenario, moving ions are dispersed angularly during its passage through the interacting medium.
