Abstract

A well-established set of experimental data on L X-ray production cross sections induced by proton bombardment of 46 ≤ Z ≤ 70 elements has been used to test the performance of various theoretical approximations for the description of the ionization process. The disagreement observed between the data and the predictions of the ECPSSR model is reduced by replacing the screened hydrogenlike wave functions with the more realistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater ones. A united-atom approximation in the treatment of the binding correction, previously suggested by our group, has been successfully applied to remove the remaining significant discrepancies. A more sophisticated Coulomb correction and the introduction of second-order effects in the calculation of the cross sections do not produce further meaningful improvements.
