Abstract

A PIXE analysis has been performed on a small set of potsherds to explore the possibility of application of the method in future systematic analyses of the vast pottery production of medieval Italy for integration in historical and archeological studies. The samples analysed are from the Savona, Liguria and Pisa, Toscany regions, representing pottery types Graffita Arcaica Tirrenica, Ingobbiata Chiara, Ingobbiata Colorata and Maiolica Arcaica. PIXE analyses of Pb and Sn provide characteristic signals to distinguish different glazes.

Between approximately 1220 and 1310 AD, a transitional technique appears [3–5]. One finds white slip and enamel together [6], in the same ceramic body and on the same surface. This particular kind of pottery, known as “Ligurian Proto-majolica” (PML) (Fig. 1), is found essentially in a rather small area, comprising the neighbouring regions of Provence (abbey of Saint Pierre de l’Almanarre, Hyères, in France) and Liguria (sites of Andora, Savona, Castel Delfino, Masone, Genoa, abbey of S. Fruttuoso, in Italy) and only in religious or military contexts.
