Abstract

A method which uses magnetic optical elements to increase the uniformity of beams used in irradiating large targets with charged particle beams is described. Among its potential uses are ion implantation, charged particle cancer therapy, radiation effects on biological systems and radiation material damage studies, and heavy ion irradiation of foils for microfilters.

In these cases, non-linear magnets have been proposed to perform the uniformization. The non-linear magnets can be either standard multipole magnets [1–5] or step-like field magnets [6–8] or other special magnets with different high-order field components [9]. Although the initial distribution is not easy to predict in the design phase, it is reasonable to assume that the beam distribution is symmetric, thus only anti-symmetric fields are needed for the purpose.

Table 1 gives the comparison of the peak current density with different distributions (two-dimensional). The method of using standard multipole magnets to obtain uniform-like distribution has been suggested and discussed by other authors [3–7]. By using nonlinear magnets in the upstream beamline and proper linear optics, one can twist the beam distribution in phase space and obtain more homogeneous distribution in transverse plane at the target.
