Abstract

The conditions for production of radioactive ion-beams from targets of refractory metals by addition of CF4 gas have been investigated. The production yields of chemically pure mass separated beams, obtained through the formation of molecular ions, are described for the elements Ca, Sc, Sr, Y, (Zr), Ba, Lu, and Hf. Improved release properties are obtained for several elements, owing to the formation of volatile chemical compounds in the target. Production yield curves are presented, and applications to other targets and elements are briefly discussed.

Hoff et al. [8] describe the use of CF4 on U-235 deposited on graphite cloths, showing release of Ga, Sr, Y, In, Sn, Ba and the lanthanides. However, their claim to observe Zr could not be confirmed by Eder et al. [10] who did show increased yields of Y and rare earth elements using a UCx target at ISOLDE. Moreover, our tests at HRIBF with UCx fiber and pressed powder targets also show no release of Zr by introducing CCl4 or SF6.
