Abstract

It is pointed out that measurements of the analyzing power Ay(θ) for scattering of polarized fast neutrons are subject to certain instrumental effects which have so far been neglected. As an illustration, np scattering at 10 MeV is discussed. It is shown that neutron scattering by carbon in the neutron detector causes an anomaly in Ay(θ) for angles θ when the energy of the scattered neutrons is near a n + 12C resonance.
