Abstract

The tandem accelerator of the Nuclear Structure Facility has been in regular scheduled operation for just over two years at voltages up to 20 MV and with a variety of accelerated ions ranging from hydrogen to iodine.

Operation of the machine is described and the performance of the various components including ion sources for radioactive as well as stable ion species and gas and foil strippers is discussed. Beam optics and beam transmission improvements are described.

An analysis is made of the main factors which are at present limiting the performance and efficiency of the machine. Critical components are identified and improvements to these components are described.

A brief description is given of the experimental areas and of new equipment to be commissioned in the near future.
