Abstract

A time-of-flight mass spectrometer was constructed to measure the masses of neutron-rich recoils produced in proton-induced fragmentation reactions. This system consists of four sector magnets designed such that the overall flight time is independent of the velocity of the recoil ions and thus depends only on their mass-to-charge ratios.

A typical revolution time spectrum for uranium fission products is shown in Fig. 7, where a mass resolving power of 2 × 105 has been achieved, and several new masses of neutron-rich nuclei were determined for the first time [23]. It is noted that Schottky mass spectrometry (SMS) has also been successfully performed for years [24–28]; however, the relatively long cooling process does not allow the masses of short-lived exotic nuclei to be measured. Recently, isochronous mass spectrometry has also been performed at the storage ring facility CSRe at IMP [29].
