Development of high pressure proportional counters

Abstract

We have begun to investigate the possibility of operating gas counters at high pressures. In a first step we were able to operate cylindrical chambers up to 430 atm with a gas gain of about 300 using a mixture of 92% Ar and 8% CH4.
