Abstract

The classical periodic orbits are shown to be a powerful tool when analyzing shell effects in ellipsoidal cavities. The oblate-prolate asymmetry in the ground-state deformation is manifested in the lengths of the smallest orbits. In strongly deformed prolate cavities the periodic orbits in the equatorial circle are important. No relation between the shape of the potential and the form of important periodic orbits is found.
