Abstract

The mean lives and excitation energies of the lowest six excited states of 23Mg were measured by means of the 24Mg(τ, αγ)23Mg reaction. Coincidence Doppler-shift attenuation measurements lead to mean lives of τm = 1650 ± 250, 80 ± 20, 830 ± 170, 140 ± 30, 155 ± 30 and < 25 fs for the 23Mg levels at Ex = 0.45, 2.05, 2.36, 2.71, 2.77 and 2.91 MeV, respectively. Combination of previous information with the present mean lives makes it possible to assign Jπ = 72+ and 12 to the levels at 2.05 and 2.77 MeV, respectively. The spectroscopic data on the A = 23 isobaric doublet are compared with the results of many-particle shell-model calculations.
