Abstract

The energy spectra of neutrons emitted following radiative capture on 16O and 28Si nuclei of negative pions at rest have been measured. There is some evidence in the 16O spectrum for a group of neutrons between 4 and 5 MeV which may correspond to decay of a giant resonance state, while both the 16O and 28Si data have an excess of neutrons at the higher energies which may be due to direct emission of neutrons.
