Abstract

Complex-fragment emission from the 44 and 77 $A · MeV^{40} Ar +^{197} Au$ reaction has been investigated. Equilibrium and non-equilibrium components have been identified which are discussed in terms of statistical emission from the hot target-like fragment and of a possible persistence of a deep-inelastic process.

Highest temperatures sustainable in heavy nuclei produced in Ar+Au collisions at 60 A MeV

The specific decay mode of hot nuclei surviving fission or fragmentation and leading in the final state to the production of a large residue has been studied in Ar+Au collisions at 60 AMeV. The temperature of these residues has been obtained by analysing the kinematical characteristics (angular and kinetic energy distributions) of the coincident neutrons detected by the DEMON neutron detector. A total cross section of 50 mb has been measured for the production of residues with an initial temperature of 6 MeV or more. This result is compared with the predictions of a microscopic transport model.
Fragment emission from modestly excited nuclear systems

Fragment emission patterns occurring in nuclear systems of modest excitation are studied. Exclusive measurement of fragment emission in $^{14} N+^{197} Au$ reactions at $E A = 100, 130 and 156 MeV$ allows selection of central collisions where a single source dominates the decay. Low threshold measurement of IMF emission for these events allows investigation of the influence of detector threshold effects. The time scale of fragment emission is deduced using fragment-fragment velocity correlations. Comparisons are made to the predictions of a statistical decay model.

Hot nuclei in reactions induced by 475 MeV, 2 GeV <sup>1</sup>H and 2 GeV <sup>3</sup>He

Inclusive neutron multiplicity distributions have been measured for 475 MeV, 2 GeV proton- and 2 GeV ³He-induced reactions on Ag, Au, Bi, U targets. There is general agreement between these multiplicity data and results of intranuclear cascade calculations. The results indicate a broad distribution of excitation energies with 10% of the events exceeding 500 MeV. For a thermalized nucleus this would translate into temperatures exceeding 5 MeV
