Abstract

The energy loss of fast channeled particles of low charge is calculated on the basis of quantumperturbation methods and some generalized sum rules. At high velocities (v > Z2v0), it is found that the only properties of the medium required in the description are Bethe's I-value and the ground-state electronic charge density. At lower velocities, more complicated information in the form of generalized dipole osciallator strengths is required. In order to obtain useful formulas for this velocity regime, simple estimates of these quantities based upon a statistical model are discussed. In both velocity regimes, the results for well-channeled particles are compared with experimental results.

Improvements of the energy loss model based on the contribution of the valence and core electrons of the atoms led to a better agreement between the experiment and theory [16]. New impulse in the investigation of the energy loss of non-relativistic channeled ions was done by the trajectory dependent energy loss model based on the perturbation theory [17]. In this model, the valence and core electrons were treated equally, while the electron density was averaged along the particle trajectory.

Further development of the energy loss model has included the contribution of the core electrons to the energy loss, leading to a better agreement between experiment and theory [15]. Also, the trajectory dependent energy loss model based on the perturbation theory was developed for the non-relativistic particles [16]. In that model there was no distinction between the valence and core electrons, while the electron density was averaged along the particle trajectory.
