Abstract

Symmetric fission of 24Mg into two 12C nuclei following inelastic scattering of 120 MeV α-particles has been studied. The 12Cg.s. + 12Cg.s. and the 12Cg.s. + 12C(4.44 MeV) decay modes were identified in the excitation energy ranges of 24Mg, 22 MeV ≦ Ex ≦ 26 MeV and 25 MeV ≦ Ex ≦ 32 MeV, respectively. Depending on the assumptions made about the α'-inclusive spectrum, lower and upper limits have been obtained for the average partial width 〈ΓCC/Γ〉.
