Abstract

The present status of the low and medium energy NN interaction and of the low energy $N N$ interaction is reviewed. Careful confrontation of theoretical predictions with the most recent results on experimental observables is emphasized. The question of the dibaryon resonances is discussed. For the $N N$ interaction, in view of the problem of the existence of baryonium states as bound or resonant states of the $N N$ system and of their properties, tests of different types of annihilation potentials against the existing experimental data are examined. Implications for the future experimental program at LEAR are discussed.

A strong energy dependence of the analyzing power in the pp → dπ<sup>+</sup> reaction and the question of an isovector dibaryon resonance

Angular and energy dependence of the cross section and analyzing power of the reaction pp → dπ<sup>+</sup> between 725 and 1000 MeV

The differential cross section and analyzing power of the reaction pp → dπ⁺ were measured for nine incident proton energies between 725 and 1000 MeV. A magnetic spectrometer was used to detect either deuterons or pions. Cross-section and analyzing-power angular distributions were respectively fitted with Legendre polynomial and associated Legendre function expansions, the coefficients of which were found to vary smoothly with energy in the vicinity of the alleged ³F₃ dibaryon resonance.
Study of p̄p pionic annihilation in the momentum range 403 to 670 MeV/c

Exclusive p̄p pionic annihilation reactions in the momentum range of 403 to 670 MeV/c were analysed in terms of intermediate states involving resonances. The fractions of the various intermediate states showed no significant dependence on the incident momentum. They were compared with a statistical model incorporating SU(3) symmetry. The agreement between the model and data was moderate and qualitative. The exclusive as well as topological cross sections were compared with the same statistical model and a potential model incorporating quark rearrangement. The agreement with the latter model was better than with the first in general, but it was still mostly qualitative.
pp̄ annihilation in an S-wave quark rearrangement model

The S-wave annihilation contribution to the pp̄ inelastic cross section at low energies is calculated in a quark-antiquark rearrangement model which includes the effect of NΔ̄ + N̄Δ and ΔΔ̄ intermediate states. This mechanism, which leads automatically to a separable interaction, is able to account for about 15% of the observed cross section. The extension of the model to P-waves is also outlined.
A new evaluation of the n-n oscillation time

The neutron-antineutron oscillation time τ is evaluated through the study of ΔB=2 transitions in nuclei. A description of the neutron-nucleon and of the antineutron-nucleon interaction in terms of explicit meson exchange is employed, but for the shortest distances which are dealt with phenomenologically. Utilizing the most recent bound on the nucleon lifetime, a lower limit $τ⪆3×10^{7}$ s is found
