Abstract

Selected results for electron scattering from complex nuclei are reviewed. Topics include ground state charge densities, charge densities of deformed nuclei, elastic magnetic scattering, magnetic excitation of high spin states, magnetic excitation of rotational states, quasi-elastic scattering and examples of the synthesis of electromagnetic and hadronic data.

Neutron rearrangement of the magic number 90Zr-core determined by the matter density difference between 90Zr and 92Zr

Matter density distributions and root-mean-square matter radii for ⁹⁰Zr and ⁹²Zr were determined through fitting the small-angle differential cross sections of proton elastic scattering at 0.8 GeV with the Glauber model. With the obtained neutron densities, a neutron rearrangement beyond the expectation for the magic number ⁹⁰Zr-core was found from ⁹⁰Zr to ⁹²Zr by adding two valence neutrons. By considering the surface-peaked term, the rearrangement was reproduced by the shell model calculations with the realistic Woods-Saxon potentials. It indicates that the surface-peaked term related to surface nucleon interactions plays an important role in describing the nucleon rearrangement, since the surface-peaked term would improve the description of the radial wave functions.
Scattering of polarized electrons from deformed nuclei: The case of elastic and inelastic scattering to discrete states in 21Ne

The $(e, e ′)$ process from ²¹Ne is studied. The intrinsic nuclear wave function is described from a deformed Hartree-Fock calculation with Skyrme-type effective interactions. Two different microscopic rotational models, projected Hartree-Fock and cranking, are used to describe the transition multipoles and the various structure functions contained in the differential cross section. Results with these two nuclear models are compared and discussed. The information about the transition multipoles contained in the polarization observables is also analysed.
The effective 3he-nucleon force in a microscopic DWBA approach to the (3He, t) charge-exchange reaction

The (³He, t) reaction has been studied on the targets ¹²C, ¹⁶O, ²⁴Mg, ²⁶Mg, ²⁸Si, ³²S, ⁴²Ca, ⁴⁸Ca, ⁵⁴Fe, ⁵⁸Ni and ⁹⁰Zr at incident energies 66–90 MeV. From angular distributions of transitions to selected states the parameters V_ρ, V_σρ, V_Tρ and V_LSρ of an effective projectile-nucleon force parametrized with single Yukawa potentials have been obtained for this energy domain. Differences from the force proposed earlier by Schaeffer for a lower energy are found, notably in the tensor component.
On magnetic dipole form factors in deformed nuclei

Properties of magnetic dipole form factors for deformed nuclei are discussed in terms of the angular momentum projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoljubov approximation and the neutron-proton interacting boson model. It is pointed out that there exists a relation between the M1 form factor for the excitation of the orbital K^π=1⁺ band, the M1 form factor for the ground-state band, and the collective M1 form factor in odd-A nuclei.
Elastic and inelastic scattering of K+ mesons on deformed nuclei

Various aspects of the scattering of medium energy K⁺ mesons on deformed nuclei are investigated in the light of a specific example, viz. the scattering of 800 MeV/c positive kaons on ¹⁵²Sm. The effects of coupled channels are found to be significant despite the fact that the K⁺ meson is a rather weakly interacting hadronic probe. The localization of the reaction mechanism on a deformed target is discussed for both protons and K⁺ mesons to compare the extent of surface and volume probing capability of these two projectiles. The results show the remarkable sensitivity of the elastic and inelastic K⁺ differential cross sections to the differences between the neutron and proton density distributions in deformed nuclei.
