Abstract

The 15N(d, p) reaction leading to unbound states of 16N has been studied at Ed = 12 MeV. The proton spectra display patterns very similar to the energy dependence of the corresponding n-15N total cross section, including interference phenomena between resonances and continuum. The variation of resonance intensity with momentum transfer in the (d, p) reaction probes the off-energy-shell behaviour of the neutron scattering amplitude. A simple approximation is discussed, in which the off-shell effect is attributed mainly to a momentum dependence expressed by penetration factors. This model is found to give a semiquantitative description of the differential cross sections of 15N(d, p), and presents a new and sensitive method for the determination of resonance angular momenta l. Spectroscopic results for 16N resonances are given.
