Abstract

We continue our study of inelastic scattering from 20Ne and24Mg using a folding collective model described previously. We study the sensitivity of the (α, α′) reaction to various ways of deforming the nucleus along the lines suggested by Satchler. The reaction gives a surprisingly stable value of the quadrupole moment and also determines the hexadecapole moment fairly unambiguously. However, it leaves considerable ambiguity in other features of the surface structure.
