Abstract

The giant resonance observed in the reaction 11B(p, γ0)12C and the excited giant resonance observed in the reaction 11B(p, γ1)12∗C (2+ at 4.43 MeV) are studied. A coupling of the quadrupole vibration with the dipole oscillation is taken into account in our calculation based on the Tamm-Dancoff approximation and this coupling is found to play an essential role in explaining these two reactions. Characteristics of these two reactions and correlations between them are reproduced very well by our model. Especially a considerably large peak at 25.5 MeV of an excitation energy in the reaction 11B(p, γ0)12C, which could not be predicted by previous studies, is explained by the result of the coupling described above, and it is made clear why there is a correlation between this peak and the main peak in the reaction 11B(p, γ1)12∗C. Further it is explained that the angular distribution is independent of excitation energy in the two reactions.
