Abstract

The energy levels of ⁵³Fe are re-investigated in the framework of the $1 f_{72}$ shell using various effective nucleon-nucleon interactions. The agreement between experiment and calculations is satisfactory and does not strongly depend on the details of the effective interactions adopted.

Observation of isospin mixing for the isobaric analog state in 56Co through the 56Fe(p, n)56Co reaction

The reaction ⁵⁶Fe(p, n)⁵⁶Co has been studied at E_p = 17 MeV by employing the time-of-flight technique. Two prominent peaks observed at E_x = 3.51 and 3.59 MeV are assigned to be J^π = 0⁺ states from the angular distribution measurement, and interpreted as the splitting of the isobaric analog state into the nearby T_<, 0⁺ state through the isospin-mixing Coulomb interaction. A shell-model calculation has been carried out to find such a 0⁺ state, which may yield a Coulomb matrix element $〈J = 0_{2}^{+} (T = 1)¦V_{coul} ¦J = 0_{3}^{+} (T = 2, IAS)〉$ of the order of 10 keV.
Spectroscopic properties and collective structure from a shell-model description of A = 53 nuclei

A shell-model calculation on the structure of negative-parity states in A = 53 isobars is presented. Results on spectra, electromagnetic transition rates and moments, β-decay, highmultipolarity transitions and spectroscopic factors obtained with a modified Kuo-Brown force and with the surface delta interaction are compared with experiment. The measured E6, M5 and E4 transition strengths in ⁵³Fe can be rather well explained. The existence of a pure $K = 12$ band in ⁵³Fe is suggested by the microscopic calculation. Recently measured excitation energies of highspin states in ⁵³Mn are in excellent agreement with the theory.
A study of the 54Fe(p, d)53Fe reaction at 40 MeV

The ⁵⁴Fe(p, d)⁵³Fe reaction was studied using 40 MeV protons with a split-pole magnetic spectrograph. A total of 53 states were observed up to an excitation energy of 7.364 MeV in ⁵³Fe. At least 29 of these states have not been previously reported. Angular distributions were measured from 6° to 90° for transitions to 35 of these states, and were analysedwith distorted-wave Born approximation calculations. Excitation energies, transferred l-values, spectroscopic factors and the implied J^π values are given. Difficulties encountered in obtaining a reliable set of spectroscopic factors are discussed in relation to various prescriptions in the DWBA calculations, and to the one-nucleon transfer sum rule.
A study of the (τ, α) reaction on 54Fe

The ⁵⁴Fe(τ, α) reaction is studied at ¹⁸MeV using the Harwell Tandem Van de Graaff accelerator and a multichannel magnetic spectrograph. Angular distributions of several levels including a few analogues are measured up to an excitation of 7.3 MeV and the results are analysed in terms of the DWBA theory of direct reaction; the spectroscopic factors and the J^π limits are deduced for various levels. A satisfactory account of the angular distributions leading to the 1.34 ( $J^{π} = 92^{−})$ and 2.31 ( $J^{π} = 112^{−}) MeV$ levels, which are not populated by a single-step process, is given by the CCBA calculations.
Decay of 48Sc and 48V to levels of 48Ti

The decay of 1·83-day ⁴⁸Sc and 16·2-day ⁴⁸V were investigated to resolve discrepancies in the literature concerning the level properties of ⁴⁸Ti. The decay of ⁴⁸Sc populates levels at (log ft in parenthesis) 983·512(−), 2295·618(−), 3333·13 (5·52) and 3508·48 keV (5·99). The ⁴⁸V populates levels at 983·512(−), 2295·618 (6·30), 2420·8(−), 3223·92 (6·64), 3239·73 (6·26) and 3359·5 keV (9·0).
Recoil-distance lifetime measurements in 51Cr, 53Cr, 53Mn and 53Fe

Levels in ⁵¹Cr, ⁵³Cr, ⁵³Mn and ⁵³Fe were excited via (α, n) or (α, p) reactions. Using the recoil-distance method, mean-lives (in ps) have been obtained for excited states (keV) in the residual nuclei: $^{51} Cr (2256) = 66±2,^{53} Cr (1536) = 21.5±3.5,^{53} Cr (2173) = 6.7±3.1,^{53} Mn (2564) = 20^{+8}_{−6} and^{53} Fe (1424) = 4.0±1.0$ . Reduced transition probabilities calculated from these values are compared with the available theoretical values.
