Abstract

The absolute cross section for the elastic scattering of deuterons from calcium was measured for incident deuteron energies of 5.0, 6.0 and 6.5 MeV. Using the parameters obtained from optical-model analyses of these distributions, the success of distorted wave Born approximation calculations in predicting the (d, p) and (d, n) stripping distributions in this energy region was evaluated. Fair agreement was obtained to the (d, p) distributions; however, the predictions for the (d, n) distributions were less satisfactory. It was possible to reject certain families of deuteron parameters on the basis of completely unacceptable fits to the (d, n) distributions.
