Abstract

The total neutron cross sections of Cl, ⁵¹V, ⁸⁹Y, Zr, La, ¹⁴¹Pr and ²⁰⁹Bi have been measured. Experimental data were fitted with a multi-level formula to obtain the individual resonance parameters. Values of the strength functions S₀ and S₁ and of the scattering lengths R′ are obtained and compared with optical-model calculations.

Determination of the 209Bi(n,γ)210Bi and 209Bi(n,γ)210m,gBi reaction cross sections in a cold neutron beam

Gamma-ray transitions following neutron capture in ²⁰⁹Bi have been studied at the cold neutron beam facility of the Budapest Neutron Centre. Measurements have been performed using a coaxial HPGe detector with Compton suppression. Partial capture cross sections at a velocity of 2200 m/s (or a neutron energy of 25.3 meV) have been deduced relatively to the one for the 4055 keV transition after thermal neutron capture in ²⁰⁹Bi. This partial cross section of (8.07 ± 0.14) mb has in turn been obtained from measurements with a bismuth nitrate target relatively to the cross section for the 1884 keV transition after thermal neutron capture in ¹⁴N. Shell model calculations have been performed to deduce the half-life of the 3rd excited state at 320 keV and to assign the M1 multipolarity of the 320 keV transition to the ground state. Lower limits of (21.4 ± 0.8) mb and (18.2 ± 0.7) mb for the cross sections to the ground state and to the isomeric state, respectively, have been deduced from the data for the gamma rays feeding these states. The results obtained in this work are in good agreement with experimental data reported in the literature. The thermal total capture cross section has been compared with the contribution due to observed s-wave resonances.

Nuclear spectroscopic information for the known nuclides of mass 38 (Mg,Al,Si,P,S,Cl,Ar,K,Ca,Sc,Ti) has been evaluated. The principal sources of the ‘adopted levels’ presented are Endt's evaluations (1990En08, 1978En02). The data sets for reactions and decays, including all available gamma-ray data, are based mostly on the original literature. There are no data available for the excited states in ³⁸Mg, ³⁸Al and ³⁸P. Recent experiments have tried to identify ³⁸Ti nuclide but no events have been associated with this nuclide with a half-life limit of <125 ns deduced from limit on experimental cross section. This nuclide is likely to be particle unstable. No experiments have yet been reported for the identification of the ³⁸Sc nuclide which is also expected to be a prompt proton emitter.
89Y + n resonances for E = 10-740 keV and intermediate structure

High-resolution neutron total-cross-section measurements on ⁸⁹Y have been made from a few eV to 1 MeV using the pulsed neutron time-of-flight spectroscopy at ORELA with a neutron burst width of 5 ns and a nominal resolution of 0.025 ns/m at the highest energy. We have analyzed the data from 10–740 keV using a multilevel R-matrix code and obtained the values of resonance parameters (E₀, J^π, g^Γ_n). From these results we have obtained the values of average quantities up to about 600 keV: D_{l = 0} = 4.6 ± 0.3 keV, D_{l = 1} = 1.35 ± 0.15 keV; S₀ = 0.33 ± 0.045, S₁ = 5.82 ± 0.38, in units of $10^{−4} eV^{−12}$ . The staircase plots of reduced neutron widths for s- and p-waves and the plots of the Lorentz-weighted strength functions averaged over different energy intervals show an evidence of several doorway states. A least-squares fit to the lorentzian smooth curves provides the best values of Ed (doorway energy) and γ²dc (escape reduced width of doorway). These values are in qualitative agreement with the theoretical predictions. The experimental ratio of s- to p-wave level spacings was found to be 3.43 ± 0.6. This is in disagreement with the theoretical prediction of 2.06 (for σ = 3.8) and indicates a parity dependence of the level density at high excitation.
Level densities for 23 ≦ A ≦ 40

Level densities, thermodynamic temperatures, and spin-cutoff factors are deduced for nuclides in the mass range 23 ≦ A ≦ 40 from s- and p-wave neutron resonances measurements, charged-particle resonance measurements, stripping and pickup reaction measurements, and direct level counting. Numerical level density calculations are performed using experimentally determined single-particle energies, and these calculations are compared to the experimental results.

All available experimental data of nuclear structure and decay are evaluated for the known nuclides of mass 38 (Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, K, Ca, Sc, Ti). Detailed results of this evaluation are presented with the best values recommended for level energies, half-lives, γ-ray energies and intensities, decay properties (energies, intensities and placement of radiations), and other spectroscopic information. The ³⁸Ar nuclide remains as the most extensively studied via various reactions and decays; no excited states are known in ³⁸Al except for that an isomeric state is tentatively proposed from a recent β-decay measurement (2015St14); the ³⁸Sc and ³⁸Ti nuclides remain unidentified, with no experimental references reported for ³⁸Sc and with a measurement of fragmentation cross sections reported for ³⁸Ti but finding no evidence of its presence (1996Bl21). This work supersedes the earlier full evaluation of A=38 by J.A. Cameron and B. Singh (2008Ca01).
