Abstract

Excitation functions and average range measurements are reported for the (α, αn), (3He, α), (α, 3n), and (3He, 2n) reactions of 116Cd. Isomer ratios for reactions leading to 115m, gCd are also reported. The energies of the 3He and 4He ions varied between 13 and 33, and 18 and 45 MeV, respectively. The results of the average range measurements are compared with ranges predicted by Lindhard, Scharff and Schiøtt on the assumption of compound nucleus formation. Good agreement is obtained for the (α, 3n) and (3He, 2n) reactions at all energies, indicating the mechanism is predominantly compound nuclear. The average ranges for the products of the (α, αn) and (3He, α) reactions are much lower than expected at energies greater than about 25 MeV. These results are interpreted as involving low momentum transfer due to a direct interaction mechanism. These conclusions are also corroborated by the isomer. ratios.

For its production several nuclear processes have been reported [for review cf. [13]. In general, attempts have been made to obtain no-carrier-added 117mSn via 3He- and α-particle induced reactions on isotopes of In and Cd [168–170], as well as via proton induced reactions on Sb [214]. The integral yields of 117mSn are shown in Fig. 4 as a function of the projectile energy.

Our cumulative data are shown in Fig. 6 together with the results of previous experiments from the literature and the results of the theoretical nuclear model code calculations. Our data are in good agreement with the previous data of Montgomery and Porile [20] and give energy range extension to it. Both TENDL-2015 and EMPIRE 3.2 produce a maximum on the calculated curves at slightly different energies, which could not be confirmed by any of the experimental results.
