Abstract

Fusion cross sections for the reactions 16O + Sm and 40Ar + Sm are calculated in a simple model based on barrier penetration, static deformations and zero-point motion of collective surface vibrations. An excellent agreement with measured fusion cross sections is obtained for energies below the Coulomb barrier by including the effect of low-lying 2+ and 3 states in the samarium isotopes.
