Abstract

The isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance (GQR) in40Ar has been studied by inelastic scattering using 172.5 MeV α-particles. The GQR was found to be located at an excitation energy Ex = 17.7±0.2MeV with a width of 6.9±0.6 MeV (FWHM). The angular distribution of the GR peak agrees very well with that predicted for a L = 2 transition exhausting (61±15)% of the isoscalar E2 energy weighted sum rule. However, small L = 4 and significant L = 0 contributions cannot be excluded.
