Abstract

Gamma-ray transitions in 34Cl have been studied with p-γ coincidence measurements in the 32S(τ, pγ)34Cl reaction. A new level, at Ex = 2179.4 ± 1.4 keV has been found. From DSA measurements mean lives of τm = 940 ± 400, 46 ± 15, 400 ± 100 and 260 ± 75 fs were found for the 34Cl levels at Ex = 1.89, 2.16, 2.18 and 2.38 MeV, respectively. Branchings are given for the three upper states. From the presently known information it is possible to identify the 2.16 MeV level with the 2+, T = 1 state expected in this region. Even parity can be deduced for the 0.46, 1.89 and 2.38 MeV levels.

The M1 and E2 strengths for a number of transitions in 34Cl have been compared with calculations performed with many-particle shell-model wave functions.
