Nuclear structure of 161Dy studied with (n, γ), (d, p) and (d, t) reactions

Abstract

The nucleus ¹⁶¹Dy was studied with (n, γ) and (n, e) experiments at Grenoble, ARC measurements at Brookhaven and (d, p) and (d, t) reactions at Munich. An extensive level scheme was established up to 1400 keV including about 180 γ-transitions and 13 rotational band assignments. The neutron binding energy was determined to be 6454.47 (9) keV.

The experimental results from the various reaction and radioactive decay studies leading to nuclides in the A=161 mass chain have been reviewed. Nuclides ranging from Sm (Z=62) through Os (Z=76) are included, with Os being a new entry based on a recently reported study. These data are summarized and presented, together with adopted level schemes and properties. This work supersedes the previous evaluation (2000Re14) of the data on these nuclides.
Levels of 159Gd populated in average resonance neutron capture

The primary γ-rays and energy levels in ¹⁵⁹Gd were investigated in average resonance neutron capture using tailored neutron beams at 2 keV and 24 keV and a pair spectrometer at the high flux reactor at Brookhaven. Nearly 200 levels with spin up to $52$ are reported below 3 MeV. The distribution of radiative strength in this nucleus was obtained and is compared with a giant dipole resonance and single-particle strength models. The density of observed levels was determined and is described in terms of the constant temperature Fermi gas model. The neutron binding energy in ¹⁵⁹Gd was determined to be 5943.32(12) keV.
Investigations of159-163Dy using incomplete fusion reactions

The isotopes ^159–163Dy have been investigated using the incomplete fusion reactions ⁷Li → ^158,160Gd at beam energies of 8 MeV/u. The γ-rays were detected in the GASP spectrometer in coincidence with the fast charged particles detected in the ISIS silicon ball. The level schemes of all five isotopes could be amply extended. The most important result was the observation of both the ground state and Stockholm bands in ¹⁶²Dy up to high spin covering the band crossing region. The crossing in this nucleus is shifted to a higher frequency in comparison to the lighter Dy isotopes. The interaction strength between the two bands could be determined with high precision and with this result, a full oscillation of the interaction strength from one node to the next within an isotopic chain could be observed for the first time.
