Exploring quark-gluon degrees of freedom in nuclei

Lepton-nucleus scattering and ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions provide complementary means to study the interface of nuclear physics and QCD.This talk focusses primarily on the physics of ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions, and how they may produce deconfined, fully chirally symmetric phases of nuclear matter in which quark-gluon degrees of freedom may be studied over extended distance scales.
