Manifestation of quadrupole collectivity in the magnetic dipole strength

Abstract

We discuss the systematics of E2 and M1 transition strengths as obtained from experimental data in the rare-earth region. The similarity is studied in the light of the observed dependence of E2 and M1 transition strength on quadrupole deformation. Especially the “saturation” effect for these electromagnetic observables is discussed, starting from the Nilsson deformed-shell model. The data are compared to the present calculations, using a QTDA approach. The particular E2-M1 correlation is investigated within the IBM-2 using a sum-rule approach.

Complete scissors mode strength in heavy deformed odd-mass nuclei: A case study of <sup>165</sup>Ho and <sup>169</sup>Tm *

The low-energy dipole strength distributions in ¹⁶⁵Ho and ¹⁶⁹Tm have been studied in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments at the S-DALINAC utilizing a Euroball Cluster detector. In the energy interval between 2.5 and 4.0 MeV, where the scissors mode is expected, 35 ground state transitions could be observed in ¹⁶⁵Ho and 53 in ¹⁶⁹Tm. Assuming M1 character for all these transitions corresponds to ΣB(M1) ↑= 1.54(23), μ_N² and ΣB(M1) ↑= 2.15(63), μ_N² for ¹⁶⁵Ho and ¹⁶⁹Tm, respectively. A statistical analysis is applied to the measured spectra which is capable of reconstructing the complete strength, including contributions of transitions below the observation limit, with the ratio between M1 and E1 excitations and their total strengths taken as an average over the even-mass neighbours. This results in summed M1 transition strengths of ΣB(M1) ↑= 3.54_−0.95^+0.75, μ_N² (¹⁶⁵Ho) and ΣB(M1) ↑= 3.36_−0.57^+1.00μ_N² (¹⁶⁹Tm). The large variations of the summed dipole strength and the fragmentation in other deformed odd-mass nuclei can be reproduced by the same statistical ansatz. The total low-lying M1 strength in heavy deformed odd-mass nuclei is in agreement with the findings in the neighbouring even-mass nuclides as well as with sum-rule predictions.

Investigation of nuclear structure by resonance fluorescence scattering

After and introduction to the subject, the formalism describing nuclear resonance scattering (NRF) is briefly summarized. Experimental techniques and developments are discussed in some detail. Recent results are presented from systematic NRF experiments studying low-lying dipole excitations in heavy nuclei. The following topics are covered: the systematics and fragmentation of the M1 Scissors Mode in even-even rare earth and actinide nuclei, its deformation dependence and saturation behaviour, the existence of the Scissors Mode in odd deformed nuclei, 2⁺⊗ 3⁻ two-phonon E1 excitations in N=82 isotones and Z=50 isotopes, 2⁺⊗ 3⁻ ⊗ particle multiplets in odd nuclei around N=82, low-lying ΔK=0 electric dipole excitations in deformed nuclei, and E1 excitations around 2.6 MeV in deformed nuclei, which are interpreted as candidates for novel two-phonon excitations (coupling of the K=1 octupole and K=2 γ-vibrations).
A schematic model for the study of fragmentation of scissors M1 strength in deformed nuclei

We study a fragmentation model in order to describe the distribution of a collective, scissors-like 1⁺ state into a background of deformed two- and four-quasiparticle excitations. The coupling matrix elements for coupling the collective state to the underlying microscopic structures are studied. The fragmentation results are compared to the available data. One-nucleon transfer strength distributions are discussed with reference to the fragmentation of two-quasiparticle configurations. We also point out possible origins for intermediate structure in the fragmentation mechanism.
