Abstract

To improve estimates of the reaction rate for 26Al(p, γ)27Si (Q = 7465 keV) at stellar temperatures of T < 2 × 108 K, the level structure of 27Si near the proton threshold was investigated using the 28Si(3He, α)27Si reaction at E(3He) = 15 MeV and a magnetic spectrograph. The observed states at Ex = 7530 and 7596 keV correspond to potential resonances at Ep(c.m.) = 65 and 131 keV, respectively. If one of these resonances participates in the capture process, the reaction rate increases significantly over the currently accepted rate at low temperatures. Information on the level structure of 27Si for Ex = 4.1 to 8.4 MeV is also reported.
