Abstract

The β and γ activity of 140Cs (64 sec) produced by the decay of the fission product 140Xe (13 sec) have been studied by using the ARIEL on-line isotope separator. The Qβ value (6300 ± 100 keV) of the 140Cs β-decay has been measured and a tentative level scheme (45 levels) of 140Ba is given. The two-phonon triplet 0'+, 2'+, 4+ has been evidenced by γ-γ angular correlations. A spin assignment for the 140Cs ground state level (1) is also proposed.
