Abstract

The properties of prompt neutrons accompanying spontaneous ternary fission (with an alpha particle as a third fragment) of 252Cf were studied. The angular distributions of neutrons with respect to the flight direction of the fission fragment were measured for both the ternary and the binary fission. The number of neutrons and the yield ratio of neutrons emitted from the light and heavy fragments in ternary fission were determined by comparison with those observed in binary fission. The neutron yield as a function of the kinetic energy of the α-particle was also obtained.

The conclusions concerning the origin of prompt neutrons accompanying ternary fission, the excitation energy of pre-neutron emission fragments, and the energy required to release α- particles during fission are discussed.
