Abstract

First results are reported from experiments at the new heavy-ion facility SIS/ESR at GSI Darmstadt. Ion beams between 20Ne and 157Au were provided at energies up to 2 GeV/nucleon and 1.2 GeV/nucleon, respectively. These first studies address questions of nuclear fragmentation, nuclear structure of nuclei far off stability, and the properties of compressed nuclear matter and the nuclear equation of state.
