Abstract

The reaction 12C(p, p′)12C (15.11 MeV, 1 +, T = 1) has been studied over the incident energy range 20.5 to 30.3 MeV. In this region the excitation function for the reaction has resonances several hundreds of keV wide which suggests the presence of intermediate structure at this excitation in 13N. The differential cross sections for the inelastically scattered protons show a change in the reaction from a direct to a compound nuclear mechanism in a narrow energy range. The behaviour of the cross sections is succesfully explained using the DWBA theory and a three-quasi-particle model for the intermediate levels in 13N. The following spins and parities for these “doorway” states are deduced with the theory of angular correlations: 52+ at 20.9 MeV; 52 at 25.5MeV; 32 at 25.5 MeV.
