Abstract

Differential cross sections and polarizations are presented for the elastic scattering of 30.4 MeV protons by 54Fe and for inelastic scattering to the 1.4a, 4.8 and 6.4 MeV states. The results for the 1.41 MeV state are compared with DWBA calculations. Unlike the cross sections, the predicted polarizations are in poor agrement with experiment when shell-model wave functions are used. A collective-model description gives fair agreement with experiment provided a sufficiently large deformation parameter is used for the spin-orbit potential.
