Quasimolecular states and nuclear structure: An experimental survey☆

Abstract

On the basis of recent experimental results it is argued that signatures of quasimolecular structure are observed for many heavy ion systems with combined mass number A⪅60. Emphasis is placed on the possibility of extracting nuclear structure information from the data. We try to summarize existing interpretations and point out interesting avenues for further study.
