Photopion reactions in complex nuclei

Abstract

The yields of the reactions $^{11} B (γ, π^{−})^{11} C,^{27} Al (γ, π^{+})^{27} Mg,^{51} V (γ, π^{+})^{51} Ti and^{51} V (γ, π^{−} 2 n)^{49} Cr$ have been measured by activation analysis from threshold up to 750 MeV. The true and integrated cross sections have been calculated. The experimental cross sections have been compared with predictions from a Fermi gas model. Fairly good agreement is obtained.

Chromium and titanium isotopes produced in photonuclear reactions of vanadium, revisited

Photonuclear production yields of ⁵¹Ti und ^51,49,48Cr from ⁵¹V were redetermined for bremsstrahlung end-point energies (E₀) of 30 to 1000 or 1050 MeV with the aid of radiochemical separation of Cr. The yield curves for ⁵¹Ti, ⁵¹Cr, ⁴⁹Cr and ⁴⁸Cr show a clear evidence for two components in the production process; one tor secondary-proton reactions at E₀ < Q_π and the other for photopion reactions, at E₀ > Q, Q_π being Q-values for (γ, π⁺) and (γ, π⁺ xn) reactions. The contributions of the secondary reactions for production of the Ti and Cr isotopes at E₀ > Q_π were then estimated by fitting calculated secondary yields to the observed ones at E₀ < Q_π, and found to be about 40%, 20%, 4% and 4% for ⁵¹Ti, ⁵¹Cr, ⁴⁹Cr and ⁴⁸Cr, respectively, at E₀ = 400 to 1000 MeV. The calculation of the secondary yields was based on the excitation functions for ⁵¹V(n, p) and (p, x′n) calculated with the ALICE code and the reported photoneutron and photoproton spectra from ¹²C and some other complex nuclei.
The present results for ⁴⁹Cr are close to the reported ones, while the present ⁴⁸Cr yields differ by a factor of about 50. For the ⁵¹Ti and ⁵¹Cr yields, there are some discrepancies between the present and reported ones. The yield corrected for the secondaries, in units of μb/equivalent quantum, were unfolded into cross sections per photon, in units of μb, as a function ol monochromatic photon energy with the LOUHI-82 code. The results for the ⁵¹Ti and ⁴⁹Cr are in disagreement in both the magnitude and shape with the theoretical predictions based on DWIA and PWIA. A Monte Carlo calculation based on the PICA code by Gabriel and Alsmiller does reproduce the gross feature of the present results.

The mass-yield dependence of (γ,n) and (γ,p) reactions in the photon energy range (0.2–1) GeV has been investigated. A Monte Carlo calculation for these reactions has been carried out to compare values of the measured cross sections with those arising from different models of interaction. Very good agreement was found between experiment and estimates based on a fast-step, direct character for the reaction mechanism. As a result of the analysis, N- and Z-dependences of mean cross sections are given for the (γ,n) and (γ,p) reactions. Agreement with a more sophisticated theory is also quite reasonable.

Cross sections per equivalent quantum, in the energy range 0.3–1.0 GeV, have been measured for spallation residuals from ⁵¹V, ⁵⁵Mn, natural Fe, and ⁵⁹Co targets. Mean cross sections per photon have been deduced in this energy range and the data analysed in terms of charge-dispersion curves and mass-yield distributions. The mean cross sections per photon have also been compared with a semiempirical Rudstam's formula. A satisfactorily good agreement has been found with the calculated yields within a factor of two.
Final state interactions in nuclear pion photoproduction over the (3, 3) resonance

An impulse approximation calculation is made on the reaction ⁵¹V(γ, π⁺)⁵¹Ti from the region just above photopion threshold to the tail of the (3, 3) resonance. Pion final state distortions are taken into account through realistic optical potentials. Results are compared to those for plane-wave and surface-produced pions and to recent experiment. Comparison is made between surface-produced pions and pions distorted by the s-wave component of the optical potential.
