Abstract

Polarization and differential cross section data for elastic proton-proton scattering between 0.86 and 2.74 GeV/c are presented. A comparison is made with existing phase-shift analyses.

The pp elastic scattering analyzing power measured with the polarized beam and the unpolarized target between 1.98 and 2.80 GeV

A polarized proton beam extracted from SATURNE II was scattered on an unpolarized CH₂ target. The angular distribution of the beam analyzing power A_oono was measured at large angles from 1.98 to 2.8 GeV and at 0.80 GeV nominal beam kinetic energy. The same observable was determined at the fixed mean laboratory angle of 13.9° in the same energy range. Both measurements are by-products of an experiment measuring the spin correlation parameter A_oon.
Energy-dependent measurements of the pp elastic analyzing power and narrow dibaryon resonances

The energy dependence of the pp elastic analyzing power has been measured using an internal target during polarized beam acceleration. The data were obtained in incident-energy steps varying from 4 to 17 MeV over an energy range from 0.5 to 2.0 GeV. The statistical uncertainty of the analyzing power is typically less than 0.01. A narrow structure is observed around 2.17 GeV in the two-proton invariant mass distribution. A possible explanation for the structure with narrow resonances is discussed.
Observation of a narrow structure in the pp elastic scattering observable A<inf>oonn</inf> at T<inf>kin</inf> = 2.11 GeV

The angular dependece of the pp elastic scattering spin correlation parameter was measured in the angular range from 60° to 97° CM at 14 energies between 1.96 and 2.23 GeV. A rapid decrease of the energy dependence of this observable at 90° CM is observed around 2.11 GeV kinetic energy. This agrees with the behavior of A_oonn predicted on the basis of an exotic six-quark structure. The A_oonn (90° CM), together with the known differential cross section, allows the determination of the absolute value of the pure spin-singlet amplitude. The energy dependence of this amplitude shows a shoulder centered at 2.11 GeV, corresponding to a total mass of 2.735 GeV and an estimated width of 17 MeV.
Nucleons, mesons and deltas in nuclear matter a relativistic Dirac-Brueckner approach

Within the framework of the relativistic Dirac-Brueckner approach properties of both dense and hot symmetric nuclear matter are studied on the basis of a one-boson-exchange interaction. This interaction includes Δ-degrees of freedom with a dynamic description of the Δ-self-energy and reproduces nucleon-nucleon and nucleon-delta experimental observables in the energy range 0–1 GeV. Saturation of nuclear matter is studied and the saturation point is found to lie on a Coester line which goes through the empirical value for nuclear matter. The compressional energy is calculated for densities up to 4 ϱ₀ where ϱ₀ is the normal nuclear density. Furthermore we have investigated in detail the single-particle interaction in nuclear matter and compared it with other approaches like the non-relativistic imueckner approach and the relativistic impulse approximation. Finally the theory is extended to non-zero temperature by use of finite-temperature Green's functions for dressed nucleons. Isotherms in a P-ϱ diagram are obtained and we study the possible existence of a liquid-vapour phase equilibrium.
Measurement of polarization parameters for the π<sup>-</sup>p → π<sup>0</sup>n charge exchange scattering from 1965 MeV/c to 4220 MeV/c

Polarization parameters for the π⁻p → π⁰n charge exchange scattering have been measured at eight beam momenta between 1965 and 4220 MeV/c using two different experimental set-ups. The angular range covered is $−0.90 < cos θ_{π}^{∗} < 0.95$ at the five momenta of 1965, 2168, 2360, 2566 and 2960 MeV/c, where $θ_{π}^{∗}$ is the emission angle of the π⁰ meson in the c.m.s.. For three momenta of 2770, 3490 and 4220 MeV/c, the measurements cover the forward angles of $0.1 < cos θ_{π}^{∗} < 1.0$ . The results are compared with the predictions of πN partial wave analyses.
