Abstract

Data on the following quasi-two-body reactions produced in K⁻n interactions at 4.94 GeV/c are presented: Σ⁻π⁰, Σ⁻η⁰, Σ⁻ϱ⁰, Σ⁻ω⁰, Σ⁻η′⁰, Σ⁻φ⁰, Σ⁻f⁰, Σ⁻f′⁰, Λ(1405)π⁻ and Λ(1520)π⁻. Cross sections, four-momentum transfer distributions, and density matrix elements are discussed. Assessment of possible exchange mechanisms and comparisons with the predictions of the quark model are made.

Study of Ξ- and Ω- production from K-n and K-p interactions at 4.93 GeV/c

Cross sections, mass spectra, angular distributions and several other features of Ξ⁻ and Ω⁻ production from photons and neutrons in K⁻d interactions at 4.93 GeV/c are presented. A five standard deviation peak is observed in ΞKπ mass spectra near 2.6 GeV/c². A sharp rise in the Ξ⁻ three- and four-body cross sections from K⁻n interactions suggests direct-channel Σ^∗ (3.0–3.5) formation.
The reactions K-p → Y0 + vector meson at 3.15 and 3.3 GeV/c and the quark model

We present new data on the reactions $K^{−} p → Λϱ, Σ^{o} ϱ, Λω, Λφ, Σ^{o} φ, Y^{∗} ϱ and Y^{∗} φ$ . All the reactions are characterised by forward-peaked production angular distributions. Fits of the form exp(At′) to the momentum transfer distributions result in values of A ∼ 1 (GeV/c)⁻². We have examined the decay distributions of the vector mesons with respect to an axis normal to the production plane. The data are compared with the quark model predictions for the $ϱ/ω, Λ/Σ^{o} and Λ/ Y^{∗}$ ratios. The most serious contradiction is for the Λ/Σ^o ratio, which is experimentally too small.

Broken SU(6) predictions for baryon production with polarized vector mesons

Quark model and SU(6) predictions for branching ratios of Λ, Σ and Y^∗(1385) production in strangeness exchange reactions disagree with experiment. New predictions for vector meson polarization density matrix elements are presented which seem to agree with experiment. A “broken SU(6)” description which includes configuration mixing in the Σ and Y^∗ wave functions is consistent with the success of the polarization predictions and the failure of the branching ratio predictions of unbroken SU(6).
Experimental evidence for a violation of a quark model prediction at the baryon vertex

The matrix-elements of the reactions $A + N → B + (Λ, Σ, Y^{∗}$ (1385)) where A and B are hadrons and N is a nucleon, are related by quark model predictions or alternatively by baryon form-factors derived from SU(6) symmetry. Experimental results from various reactions at several energies are presented and found to be in disagreement with the prediction: the Σ and Y^∗ cross sections are consistently too large compared to the Λ cross section. Detailed analysis of vector-meson production in K⁻p and K⁻n interactions at 3 GeV/c indicate that the violation is mainly due to the spin-flip contribution at the baryon vertex.
Study of the reactions K-nY*- (1385) + vector meson at 3 GeV/c

The quasi-two-body reactions Y^∗(1385) + vector meson have been studied in K⁻n interactions at 3.0 GeV/c. The following cross sections have been found: $93 ± 13μ b for Y^{∗−} ϱ^{o}, 99 ± 24μ b for Y^{∗−} ω, and 44 ± 10μ b for Y^{∗−} φ$ . Production and decay angular distributions are discussed and the density matrix elements as function of momentum transfer are given. The exchange mechanism of the forward part of these reactions is discussed. The results are compared with various theoretical predictions and particularly with those of the quark model.
