Abstract

We report on a study of the interactions of 4.48 GeV/c K mesons on neutrons. The 372 000 picture exposure was taken in the Argonne National Laboratory 30 inch deuterium-filled bubble chamber. K0 final states from the three-or four-prong-plus-vee topologies are discussed. The final states investigated include (1) KnpππK̄0, (2) KnpππK̄0π0, (3) Kn → π+ππK̄0n. These reactions are dominated by K(890) and Δ(1236) production and the quasi-two-body reaction KnK∗−Δ0 has been studied. A search for exotic resonances found no evidence for their production. A Reggeized multi-peripheral model of Plahte and Roberts has been applied to reactions (1)–(3). Good agreement with our data is obtained for distributions in (i) cos θ, (ii) effective mass. The model also gives the correct energy dependence between 3 and 4.5 GeV/c.
