Abstract

Characteristics and construction of charge-division type single-wire position-sensitive proportional counters are described. Performances of long detectors (1.16, 1.52 and 1.82 m long and 10×30 mm² cross section) and short and thin detectors (32 and 43 cm long and 6×14 mm² cross section) are discussed.

<sup>100</sup> Mo(p, d) <sup>99</sup> Mo reaction at 21 MeV and direct reaction analysis of the low-lying continuum spectrum

The ¹⁰⁰Mo( $p →,d$ )⁹⁹Mo reaction has been studied with 21 MeV polarized protons. Momentum spectra of the emitted deuterons corresponding to the excitation energy region up to 5.75 MeV in ⁹⁹Mo have been measured. Theoretical analysis based on the standard distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) provides the lj-angular momentum transfers and spectroscopic factors of neutron hole states for 27 levels from the ground state up to E_X=2.921 MeV. The polarization data gave a more affirmative information in assigning the spins and parities. Spectrum regions from discrete levels to continuum were treated with a global analysis using the direct reaction model and continuous strength functions. The double differential cross section-energy spectra were reproduced fairly well using the DWBA-based cross sections and the asymmetrical Lorentzian form strength response function having energy-dependent spreading widths.

Charge-division type position sensing with a single-wire position sensitive counter in the self-quenching streamer mode

Using single-wire position sensitive counters with a stainless-steel anode wire of 25 μm diameter, position sensing has been performed in the self-quenching streamer (SQS) mode. Overall position resolutions of 0.26 mm and 0.69 mm fwhm for 4.5 keV X-rays were obtained for 100 mm long and 1.82 m long counters, respectively, by means of standard NIM electronic circuits and a new ratio-to-digital converter (RDC). Problems in the application of SQS mode to position sensing are discussed.
Construction of a simple focal-plane detector with high position resolution

A single-wire position-sensitive proportional counter was constructed as a focal-plane detector for a split-pole magnetic spectrograph installed at the Tandem Accelerator Center, University of Tsukuba. Good position resolution for inclined incidence (∼45°) was obtained by constructing a thin counter and by operating it in the semi-proportional region. The best position resolutions observed were 0.7 mm, 0.9 mm and 0.9 mm fwhm for protons, deutrons, and tritons, respectively, and 0.4 mm fwhm for normal-incident 5.9 keV X-rays.
Realization of the concept of the ratio-to-digital converter (RDC)

The concept of the ratio-to-digital converter (RDC) has been realized. An RDC system based on a division circuit which utilizes linear discharge functions in memory condensers has been developed. The quotient from the division circuit is converted directly into a digital form. The accuracy in the quotient is better than 0.1% for the full scale, and a linearity better than 0.05% over a dynamic range of 1:20 is obtained. This performance corresponds to that of a digital division system using two 16000-channel ADCs.
Position integral linearity of charge-division type position-sensing system and a method to obtain the total charge signal

An analysis on the linearity of a charge-division type position-sensing system is described. The method to obtain the total charge signal for division operation has been discussed in detail and criteria to design the position-sensing system with charge-division type proportional counters are shown. The previous result is confirmed theoretically, which shows experimentally that a long (⩾ 1 m) single-wire position-sensitive proportional counter can be designed to have a position non-linearity of less than 0.1%.
