Abstract

The new polarized source at the Heidelberg MP tandem is described. The source produces beams of $^{6} Li,^{7} Li$ and $^{23} Na$ ions, which are preaccelerated to 150–200 keV and injected into the MP tandem. The results of the first test runs are presented. A 44 MeV $^{7} Li$ beam has been produced and the polarization was detected in a nuclear reaction. A $Na$ beam will be accelerated during one of the next few runs. Improvements of the polarization by laser optical pumping are discussed.

Fourier transform nuclear magnetic resonance at single crystal surfaces is described. The adsorption of ⁶Li on Ru(001) is investigated by newly developed techniques utilizing atomic beam sample preparation and optical detection of the NMR signal on desorbing atoms (laser induced fluorescence) or ions (beamfoil spectroscopy). In complete analogy to magnetically detected NMR, the transverse magnetisation is coherently recorded. This allows pulse NMR to be applied to surface problems.
Interaction of aligned 23Na with 206Pb at the Coulomb barrier: Quasielastic scattering, fusion and fission

The interaction of ²³Na with ²⁰⁶Pb at energies around the Coulomb barrier for quasielastic scattering and for fusion followed by fission has been investigated, partly with aligned projectiles. Quasielastic-scattering data are required to determine the energy dependence of the strength of the double-folding potential used in coupled-channel calculations. The real and imaginary part of the energy-dependent strength of the potential turn out to be correlated by a dispersion relation. The fusion excitation function and the associated second-rank-tensor analyzing powers can be described parameter-free using the real energy-dependent potential if channel coupling is considered as well. Finally, the transmission coefficients extracted from such calculations can be used as input for calculations of the fission angular distributions. Deviations are observed at the lowest bombarding energy.
Operational experience with the FSU optically pumped polarized lithium ion source

The dye-laser optically pumped polarized ^6,7Li⁻ ion source of the FSU tandem-linac heavy-ion accelerator has completed its first year of operation. The ion source has produced highly polarized beams of ⁶Li for nuclear physics experiments with on-target currents of ⁶Li³⁺ greater than 150 nA. Absolute measurements of the on-target ⁶Li polarization have yielded P_yy = −1.33± 0.02 and P_y > 0.74 ± 0.03 for the nuclear tensor and vector polarization, respectively. No loss of polarization due to acceleration by the linac booster was observed.
Determination of the on-target polarization of an optically-pumped polarized lithium ion beam

An optically-pumped polarized lithium ion source has been built and is currently producing highly polarized ⁶Li⁻ beams with on-target ⁶Li³⁺ currents up to 150 nA. An absolute measurement of the on-target tensor polarization was made during a one week calibration run, which yielded t₂₀ = −0.938±0.013, averaged over the entire run. The on-target vector polarization is typically t₁₀ = 1.02±0.06. The nuclear polarization of the atomic beam at the source has been measured by laser-induced fluorescence to be typically t₁₀ = 1.14±0.06 and t₂₀ = −1.14±0.06. A ⁴He gas polarimeter has been calibrated as a secondary standard for monitoring both vector and tensor polarizations.
Coulomb interaction of aligned 23Na

Static and dynamic electric moments of ²³Na were determined by Coulomb interaction of aligned ²³Na with ¹²⁰Sn and ²⁰⁸Pb. Aligned ²³Na projectiles in conjunction with a γ-ray calorimeter were used. Angular distributions at backward angles were determined for: second-rank tensor analyzing powers T₂₀ for elastic and quasielastic scattering (sum of elastic and inelastic scattering to excited states of ²³Na), cross sections and T₂₀ for inelastic scattering to the first and second excited state of ²³Na, cross section and T₂₀ for excitation of ¹²⁰Sn to its first excited state. They were used to deduce various static and dynamical moments.
Nuclear physics with polarized heavy ions

Polarized heavy ion beams (⁶Li, ⁷Li, ²³Na) have been in use as tools for the investigation of nuclear scattering and nuclear reactions for almost two decades. This review attempts to survey the research activities in this field with reference to nuclear structure, nuclear dynamics and reaction mechanisms. Besides reviewing the results from full quantum mechanical coupled channels analyses of data, special attention is paid to handwaving arguments and semiclassical pictures as a complementary way of obtaining a better understanding of the relevant physics.
