Abstract

A second inner layer of 192 silicon pad counters, covering 0.1 m2, has been built, directly surrounding the interaction region in the UA2 apparatus. Using the AMPLEX readout chips, a compact detector could be realized which uses less than 5 W of power for 3072 detecting elements. It was successfully operated during a 4 months physics run in 1988 at the CERN pp-collider.
