Abstract

A model is presented to describe electromagnetically induced two-nucleon emission processes in a shell-model picture. Distortions in the outgoing nucleon waves are accounted for by performing a partial-wave expansion in a real mean-field potential. The antisymmetry condition for the A-body wave functions is shown to be naturally preserved. The model is used to calculate (γ, pn) and (γ, pp) cross sections off the target nuclei 16O and 12C for photon energies ranging from 50 MeV up to the Δ(1232) isobar threshold. Effects due to the pionic currents and intermediate Δ creation are implemented. The impact of the distortions due to the interaction of the outgoing nucleon waves with the A — 2 core is examined. Hadronic form factors are introduced to regularize the πNN vertices and the sensitivity of the cross section to the pion cutoff mass is examined. The relative contribution of the (γ, pp) and the (γ, pn) channel to the total photoabsorption strength is discussed. Further, the photon energy dependence of the (γ, pp)/(γ, pn) ratio is investigated.

However, since the energy and momentum transfer were only few hundred MeV, it was practically impossible to distinguish the struck and recoil nucleons. Theoretical studies of these reactions demonstrated that in fact the dominant contribution comes from a two-step processes where there is an electromagnetic interaction with one proton, with the second proton knock-out coming from IC or FSI effects [155–157]. Even though these reactions demonstrated sensitivity to high momentum component of the nuclear wave function [158], the SRC evidence was indirect and the dominant mechanisms were final state interactions and long-range nucleon correlations [159].

At low energies the relative strengths of electromagnetic multipoles were analyzed [13,16,19,25,33,64,95,169] for comparison with predictions from multipole sum rules. The interesting question, whether the electromagnetic polarizabilities of the nucleon inside the nucleus essentially differ from those of the free nucleon, has been theoretically addressed [80,82,104,166,168] and experimentally studied with good accuracy [39,43,48,170]. In the process of nuclear Compton scattering the exchange of mesons between nucleons, which represents the nucleon–nucleon interaction, leads to specific observable phenomena in the whole energy region considered here.
