Abstract

Because heavy ion reactions have great promise for studying spin strength in nuclei, there has been an upsurge in experimental work. However, too little attention has been paid to verifying that these reactions provide a quantitative measure of spin strength. This paper reviews the work that has been done along these lines, to clarify what remains to be done. The first charge exchange experiments experiments with radioactive beams, done at MSU/NSCL, are also described briefly.
